Artist Statement:

â€‹ My work depicts joy in life and nature. Community, ritual, dancing, laughing, nature, and animals heavily impact human flourishing. Observing these instances in my own experience is incredible, and they tend to overflow into my pots and prints. I take a direct course when rendering these concepts, which manifest through the figure and landscape. Still, I like to employ ambiguous perspectives, locations, and activities to present an instance that leaves room for the viewer to recognize their own experiences in the imagery. My aim as an artist is to create a familiar and lived-in ambiance, a sort of interior, which I achieve through large-scale pieces and collections of objects that engulf empty space. I like to approach the composition of an exhibition in a way that emulates the feeling and atmosphere of a home.

In my studio practice, I explore the clay and printmaking media of wheel throwing, stone lithography, and intaglio. I enjoy these media due to their process-oriented nature, and the qualities that can be achieved with them encourage me to be intuitive in mark-making and form. I can create works that have the kinetic structure I’m looking for, and there are endless avenues for experimentation. My print designs are hand-drawn with paper and pencil before being transferred to the matrix, and more often than not, the imagery found on my pots is freehand and completely spontaneous. I have chosen to incorporate sewing and sequining in both my ceramic vessels and my prints, because it adds to the joyful aspect of my content, as well as my making process.
